As of right now, I have a TCF bank card (debit card, I think it is) that I use to make some purchases online and in stores. The handy part is that I can immediately log in to my online bank account and check how much I have left in the account after the day's worth of month is withdrawn. I'm wondering what the benefits of having a credit card are. The only part that I understand is that you are borrowing money and you pay it back on a certain date. While this may help in, say, emergency situations, I hear that many people go into debt because of these credit cards. Something that I would like to avoid. Please enlighten me as to why I should apply for a credit card instead of using my bank card for the rest of my life. And while you're here, what are some good ones that students should sign up for? Update: Thanks for the thorough response! I see points are pretty enticing. It's just I'm not the person who likes to wait to do things, and that's why it seems more convenient for me to have my money withdrawn immediately rather than having to wait for a bill. But I also see the security of a CC. Thanks for the thorough response! I see points are pretty enticing. It's just I'm not the person who likes to wait to do things, and that's why it seems more convenient for me to have my money withdrawn immediately rather than having to wait for a bill. But I also see the security of a CC. There's like a buffer that gives you time to cancel charges in case a thief uses your card (where as a thief can immediately purchase items with a bank card). For CCs, are bills usually paid through the mail anymore? I know my pops pays over the internet, straight out of his bank account. Best Answer: I just responded to this poster: Pay it back as soon as you get it in the mail. The longer you wait the more you forget, and it takes time to get mail back to them, so avoid the late fees as much as possible. ![]() Many go into debt because THEY buy more than they can afford. I use it for everything, because I KNOW I can. I never have to worry about where the money is coming from. There's always enough funds there, so that's not a problem. But for those people who make $900 a month, take home is about $700, and spend $2,000 before you know it. Where do you think they will get their rent money? Or lunch money? They have to buy entertainment, or gas money too! Nov 21, 2010 As a college student, I'm still learning the tricks of the trade here. As of right now, I have a TCF bank card (debit card, I think it is) that I use to. So, be frugal at the same time. When we were younger, and just married, we balance and put everything aside: $40 for food, $10 for gas, $350 for rent, etc..... No clothes, no shoes for the kids, no movies this week. We can't afford a trip to AZ. Maybe, two years from now we can. Don't be extravagant and you won't have that problem. Bank card don't earn points. There are cards that earm 1-5% for each $. If you're a student, have your parents add you to their CC account: for books, gas, food, just school stuff. As a cardholder, in your credit report, you'll have a 'responsible card holder' after the account, which is a positive. If you don't have a job, don't own or rent, it's best to have them add you, but give them your monthly receipts so they can compare to their monthly statement. • Tell us some more • Upload in Progress • Upload failed.
